Most of it is transformers stuff (all of it...), since that's what I read/watch. maybe someday I'll branch out more XD. I have a links section at the bottom of my Transformers page, so if you want to check stuff out it might be there. Also most of these are my first impressions, I'll mention when something is a reread/rewatch.
I recently re-watched Transformers: Cyberverse, and because I'm working on this website I thought it might make it easier to actually write something. Here we go!
first off: a simple rating. I have to give Cyberverse a 11/10 cubes of energon.
I really enjoy the show (which probably doesn't tell you anything, but bear with me here!
We don't start off particularly strong with season one. Its only 18 episodes long, thought, so I think that it's best to simply watch it in one go and head on over to season 2. You get a basic intro into the universe and the style of the show through Bumblebee and Windblades' perspectives.
The rest of the show (seasons 2, 3, and 4) doesn't put near as much focus on Bumblebee. We instead switch over to a larger cast of autobots, and the group ends up as a cross-factional group.
I'm not going to say much more about the plot and instead move on to some of the good stuff that stands out to me.
undoubtedly a very self explanatory choice, but nonetheless: I really like most of the characters in the show. There are a few that stand out to me, wether because of their design, personality, or attractiveness. I (predictably) find Megatron annoying, but he's not quite IN YOUR FACE about it. The balance (moreso game of seesaw) they manage to play with characters like Optimus Prime (who can easily switch from humourous to serious) is very appealing to me. Some of the characters I like most are Thundercracker (RIP), Hot Rod (especially a fan of his emo paint job), Soundwave, Clobber, Meteorfire, and Arcee (she's so badass!).
You heard me right; the world building.
I feel a little insane saying this, to be honest, since canon worldbuilding is usually something that pisses me off. But I think that Cyberverse did a great job of it!
I often take issue with the fact that 1) Primus is (usually) so integrally connected to the creation of Cybertron (a can of worms I should address at a later date) and 2) The fact that so often Cybertron is a singular biome. This coming from a guy who likes TOS! Almost every planet is one biome!
I think a key difference is how they treat the biomes. Star Trek provides a logical explanation: there are different classes of planets, and there are a variety of biome-planets within those classes. (I'm specifically thinking about Class M planets.) But Cybertron isn't often paired up with other biome planets! Cyberverse deals with this quickly and efficiently: there are multiple biomes on Cybertron. They never really address the "god-status" of the Primes, or Primus, but the fact that there are multiple biomes is good enough for me.
To not leave you hanging if you haven't seen Cyberverse: there are the typical cities (like Iacon), there is the Argon sea (a sea of gases with its own life forms, distinct from those you would find in Iacon), the "wild west" (technically known as Cobalt Springs)(which, admitedly, we dont see much - or any of? - of except in that episode about Wild Wheel), the valley of repugnus (which is located in "prehistoric" cybertron, near some actuall honest-to-primus forests and energon rivers).
There's diversity in that! Its a believable world that can sustain life! Because despite the transformers being made of metal, they are alive! The more diversity is present, the better chance. Also it's just straight up funner.
after that the reasons i can think of right now (12:33 am...) are much "smaller" reasons so I'm just going to list them here:
also that they don't bring up unicron at all? i really appreciate how low on their priority list the whole religious shtick is.
SO! I'm going to wrap it up there, since I should be heading to bed now and I'm loosing track of what I've already said. This was fun so hopefully I'll get around to adding some more. I think the "write it directly into the neocities editor" is a good method for me to work with.
rating: 9/10 energon cubes
I just finished watching RID2015 (litteraly yesterday XD) and I miss it already.. Figures writing a review/opinion thing might fill the void in my spark! So I've got my music going and I'm about to lock in (and hopefully only check tumblr after I finish this!
I'm completely skipping the plot summary for this one, so beware. there might be spoilers in here. There probably will be.
The show focuses on the Cybertronians: Bumblebee, Grimlock, Strongarm, Sideswipe, Drift, and by extension: Jetstorm and Slipstream, who are Drift's pupils, and the humans: Denny and Russel Clay, and Fixit is there too. I knew of Sideswipe before I really knew the show, I think thanks to a screenshot blog on tumblr. I thought he would be cool (this is unexpected.) so I was already pretermined to like him. I had actually drawn Strongarm before I saw Sideswipe, I think, but in the end it didn't really do much for her.
Regardless of all that, I quite like the cast. I don't like Drift very much at all, but I ended up warming up to this Drift. Same with Grimlock, I think G1 gave me a bad impression of him, because I liked him in RID2015. Bumblebee was ok, but there really isn't much to note here. As already mentioned, I liked Sideswipe, and Strongarm ended up pretty closely tied with Bumblebee. The humans actually did much better than my expectations. I suppose I never expect much from humans in Transformers, and I tend to hope there arent any in whatever it is that I'm watching or reading, but again - I didn't mind them. Sure, they can be annoying, but same goes for the Cybertronians!
I caved and checked tumblr.. thankfully I'm back, and on the grind.
The show has a lot of ups and downs, to be quite honest, but overall I did like it. Because remebmering what I dont like is easier, I will talk about that first. (Also the main draw was in fact Sideswipe.. and you probably don't wanna hear me talk about him.)
I think the singular most annoying thing about the show was that it's in the alligned continuity. Yeah. I'm sorry if that's your favourite continuity, but I really can't stand it. (Ok admitedly I mostly take issue with TF:P. I'll shut up about that now.)
We mostly stay away from TF:P, but on occasion we get. Soundwave. Or you know, Bulkhead. Or Ratchet. Or Starscream. Which is ok, in the end, since I'm not the one writing the show. But I think that I would have enjoyed the show more if it was less tied in, like how Rescue Bots is.
I'm realising my main issue is straight up with TF:P... there ain't no playing around going on here, let's just move on.
I found Steeljaw to be quite annoying, mostly because he sticks around for so long? Like it makes sense, but also won't he just give up! I was kinda hoping that he wouldn't be annoying when I first met him, but.. that hope faded fast.
My next issue (complaint is undoubtedly a better word, since. that's exactly what it is. a complaint) is actually with Windblade. Now I know that it's an unfair complaint to have, since I don't actually really have an issue with her. I have an issue with the writers agenda pushing so hard for Sideswipe to have a crush on her. Look. Could we not just have a NON-ROMANTIC FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN A GUY AND A GAL???? FOR ONCE????? PLEASE FUCKING PRETTY PLEASE WITH A CHERRY ON TOP????
When Windblade first appeared I was exited. I like Windblade. She's cool and badass. But unfortunately for me I like Sideswipe. So that kind of.. lense, I guess. makes it hard to remain positive. I think maybe it's because Windblade basically ended up being the person/personality (with a margin of error) that I would have had my oc be. Sucks to suck, I guess. I just ended up making a different oc, lol.
I think Windblade is a cool character in RID2015, but I've been blinded by jealousy. Essentially XD. She kinda reminds me of Princess Leia? I don't know they kinda both have that simmilar vibe or something... and they're both pretty cool.
Uhm that's a lot of thinking on my part so I'm just going to put this thing here then. Probably talk about Sideswipe. Sorry guys.
I found Optimus Prime annoying at first, but then he didn't do anything for a while so it was ok. Then he kept telling the crew what to do and I got annoyed at him again. That's Bumblebee's team? Why are you trying to take command of them?
Ok now onto Sideswipe. As we should.
Dude I'm so fucked I like him too much.
Down bad is genuinely the only way I know how to convey how I feel about him. He is my light, my sunshine, my everything. I love him. He is amazing and cool and awesome and unbeatable and
Oh you want concrete reasons why I like him? With examples and references? uhh. I'll see what I can do..
Uhm. I don't know. He's just so cool. You don't need a university paper to understand that. Trust.
He's just this hotshot arrogant loser. And he's red and a sports car and he looks cute. Like, I know I should have something to say but it just seems so OBVIOUS to me that it's hard to put it into words...
rating: 6/10 energon cubes
I dont know what to do and i think it would be evil of me if i didn't do anything "productive" so I'm going to write a quick thing about this comic.
i found it a dificult read to be honest... it took a lot of effort to look at the art and remember what was happening. i've obviously got the bonus that i know who megatron and soundwave and some of the others are but it feels like im missing important information still.
the art itself, while good, is definitely not my cup of tea. it kinda feels like you've been dunked into a vat of oil.
I suppose it's an interesting backstory thought, so it gets bonus points for that.
I feel like this comic is *sorta* part of IDW? Because while its definitely in that continuity there's just a feel to Megatron's character that I think changes too much/suddenly for me to really go "monstrocities megatron is the same bot".
You know, for this being a comic about Blurr ⚠, I actually enjoyed it. I give it a 9/10 energon cubes.
I liked the artstyle enought that the parts im less a fan of didn't really bother me, and the story itself was pretty cool. There's just something about that "being left behing" thing.. I dig it.
I like that he starts off and the world is turning and he's got money and there's Piston and his crew and they're not allowed at the Circle and then. The war is there and everything empties out. People choose sides and things shift so out of his control. That kind of fall into nothingness is very apealing to me. Perhaps because I am so afraid of it.
I like that Piston and .Starscream. get to give him the recruitment spiels, then there's lil Optimus who asks what Blurr liked about racing. How its not a desire or craving for power its a craving for "that one single moment when I know what I'm doing really matters".
So I just re-read this one (I first read it... yesterday or the day before) to see if there was anything noteworthy. Not really.
It's getting a 5/10 energon cubes.
The artstyle is ok, and the story is fine it's just kinda plain to me. Which I suppose, compared to emotional devastation, isn't always that bad.. but I think it leaves stuff to be desired. It didn't make me feel anything, so it definitely gets points marked down for that.
I read these last night but I was too tired (and lazy) to write anything about them.
I'm giving them a 6.5/10 cubes of energon.
Had it not been for Primacy I don't think that they would do nearly as well. But now let me word vomit a bit:
I liked reading about Nyon and Hot Rod. I'm probably pretty basic for that but I like Hot Rod so it's ok LOL. I found Zeta Prime to be annoying, but I really don't have much else to say about him. It kinda felt like the three comics skim over what happens? Like some serious shit went down but I find that they just move on too fast. Which I suppose might be part of the reading experience, that discomfort because things just keep moving. These comics also really cemented that Megatron's basically just a massive loser. Obviously he suffered a lot but also. He just goes down this extremist violent path that I really don't care for, and he's an asshole. He seriously had nothing better to do 😒
I found it interesting, in fact, that I liked Orion Pax. I liked his percentages of "just being a guy" and "asshole cop". He feels... I don't know.. Familiar? Maybe. I'm not quite sure.
I liked Omega Supreme too, and how he had been standing there for so long, waiting to kill Nova Prime. Nova Prime undoubtedly also sucks ass but I only know him from MTMTE/LL where my only thought about him what that "he's kinda hot". Go me, I guess. Anyways. I don't really like Ramondelli's artstyle, so reading the comics took a lot of effort, but I got the hang of it eventually. I think that, while I'm not a fan of the art, it works well. I wouldn't want to reread those comics but have them in Alex Milne's artstyle, you know. It fits.
So undoubtedly I have more thoughtsâ„¢, but the only thing I can bring to my mind is that I also didn't mind the bit with the dynobots. I don't like the Dynobots in general but I didn't mind their story. I liked Skar, kinda because he seems badass, so I'm sad that he's dead and I don't have much information about him. I don't care for Trypticon, but I do love Metroplex so I was overjoyed he is there. Why do they always have to hurt him thought... He deserves better!!!
of all of these comics + issues I have to say that Primacy #4 would have to be my favourite (probably next to when Hot Rod has to destroy Nyon, I think.) I really like Optimus Primes speech about hope or whatever.
giving this comic a meagre 3/10 energon cubes
Mostly on account of how dreadfully dull it is. I suppose if humans and that era are your jam, you would like it, but it felt very drawn out. It did not have to be 4 issues long.
This comic gets a 5/10 energon cubes
Personally I didn't particularly care about it, and the artsyle doesn't do much for me either. I thought Verity Carlos was Ultra Magnus (Minimus Ambus) at first, but turns out I was wrong. The plot is ok enough, just very confusing, since I came at it from a "the idw continuity will make sense" approach. Don't do that, because Infiltration has litteraly nothing to do/shares nothing with the previous comics I've read. I don't actually know what order I'm approaching the comics from... I think its based on in universe chronology?? I can't remember :(
This one gets a 6/10 energon cubes, probably.
I enjoyed it more than Infiltration, but I'm not sure that it has much more going for it.
I liked that Skyfire was there (or is he Jetfire this time???) and I liked the two protectobots who stick on the ship in orbit, and the one that stutters a bit. I don't know their names. One of them was called Nosecone. I also liked seeing the Wreckers. I don't know squat about the Wreckers but I think they're cool. I also liked that Bluestreak, despite not appearing, gets a namedrop. Go Bluestreak!!
I have to say I'm dissapointed in this one. It gets a 4/10 energon cubes.
Maybe liking Spotlight Blurr was bad.. It might have set my expectations too high. I don't mind the artsyle (as in genuinely, I don't care either way) but Shockwave is annoying. Sure the Dynobots are there but they don't do too much so they aren't a reason to remove points. I think it's because everybody keeps saying that Shockwave is "logical". They use it like it's a moral alignment, which is not what the word means. Logic is a process.
An interesting read. It gets a 5/10 energon cubes.
I think that it's boring. I like Nightbeat but the story really doesn't add much to his character. I think the art isn't my favourite (actually to the point I would rather read a comic with Ramondelli's artstyle), and the story is. just really boring. I had hoped that at best I would leave liking Nightbeat more, but it really changed nothing. So it's interesting for that reason, that it's just so.. meh, you know?
So this one was a re-read and let me tell you, it did not dissapoint.
It gets a 10/10 energon cubes, no hesitation.
Maybe it's because I already care about Hot Rod (probably not, looking at what happend with Spotlight: Nightbeat) but I really like this comic. I liked it the first time I read it and the sentiment lives on. It's just this specific brand of tragic... It gets to my spark ok!
I like that Dealer ends up being a turncoat because DUDE. HOT ROD WENT BACK TO SAVE YOU (sure probably like 15 million years later but still!) HE'S BEEN LIVING WITH HIS GUILT FOR HOW LONG?? UGHHHH... In another universe, he would have loved doing the dishes with you.. UWAEUUUEUEUEUEEEEEEE
Primus they make me so sad.
Not very impressive. I'm giving it a 5/10
I've never cared much for Sixshot (though I know someone who does) and I don't think I've ever really seen him before. I was pretty much going in blind. I think this comic isn't really my jam mostly because of the themes and personality traits of Sixshot. Undoubtedly he has the potential to grow on me, but I'm not really expecting that to happen.
My favourite part had to be when he says "In the lulls, there's nothing to distract me from a void I can never hope to fill. I feel... nothing. Not rage. Not duty. Not even a sense of self. It's not me staring into the abyss... ...I am the abyss."
Is this the original Ultra Magnus? 5/10 energon cubes.
I found it pretty boring. It was nice to see Scorponok (mostly because of that weird dream I had where he used she/they pronouns and was friends with Bluestreak). The plot was ok but I'm just not very passionate about the comic. I do think that the whole "at what point does giving in to compromises get you across the line" but the comic really didn't do very much for me. It was boring.. But not outright BAD or detestable, so I think 5/10 is a decent rating for it.
I hereby announce: this comic gets a 6/10 energon cubes
I'm actually in the middle of reading this right now and I just want to tell you that I find it really hard to believe that Sunstreaker is down. That guy is NOT dead. And I suppose the Elite Trine isn't that happy in here... oh well. I love that OP just kinda stands there as the guy in the truck drives right into him. Ok so I was right the car wasn't Sunstreaker. Yippee! And now Nightbeat and Hot Rod are here. I jump for joy! (I should really go eat some food thought.) Love it for OP that Roller (the g1 guy) is there heart emoji. I have a really really bad feeling about that dismembered head thought... a. YESSS ITS THE PANEL!!! THE PANEL IS HERE HALLEJULAYEH!!!!! GOLLY I feel honoured to see it in situe TOT. Oh to be held like Hot Rod is holding the fascimili... That should be me there... Who's the big floaty head at the Kraftwerk concert. Maybe my bad feeling is right.. there's a line up of Sunstreaker bodies. Oh great Lazerbeak and Ravage are here now too. Ugh. And Sixshot is on his way. Well that's that, I suppose.
Well I can't say that I really particularly cared much for writing here as I read the comic. I think I'll go back to reading the comic and writing about what I can remember afterwards.
So. Since I've writen that up there ^ I'm going to be quick about this:
This is a pretty good comic, I really appreciate that it actually has something to do with Infiltration and ties in with Spotlights: Shockwave and Sixshot. I don't mind the artstyle, and while it's not my favourite there are definitely some pretty cool moments.
4/10 energon cubes
It's very forgetable and it also felt very long. I don't care much about the Avengers either so that didn't do much for me. I definitely don't plan on re-reading this anyday soon.
I'm giving this on a 5/10 energon cubes.
It's not particularly moving, but I did enjoy it. There's a lot of reading to do, which is funny since I mostly think of comics as visual art rather than words yk. I like Soundwave (mostly) and I think it's fun that in the end he didn't want Thunderwing to come back to life. On the other hand, did they really need to use Thunderwing as their potential threat? Can we just leave that guy by the wayside of the road...
Ok that one was good! 9/10 energon cubes!
I really liked the reveal about the monsters that attack Kup at night being Autobots... 1) I wasn't expecting that. I knew something was off (especially because of Kup's language towards the crystals) but I couldn't quite figure it out. That the monsters are autobots?? Supremely delicious. Spring is really that willing to get Kup back. 2) Trailbreaker was there!!!! He was awesome and special and amazing. I love Trailbreaker.
I'm really tired right now so that's the best I can explain but I'd really reccomend reading Spotlight: Kup!
Giving this one a 7/10 energon cubes
I actually enjoyed it.. mostly because Sideswipe was there and it actually tied in with Infiltration and Escalation. It also has the Dead Universe a bit, and I don't hate that. Maybe someday I'll get bored of it but until then it's ok. And the comic also didn't feel like it was dragging on and on which was nice. I really shouldn't be suprised that Thunderwing is there but I am. Throw that guy out of the train window, will you?a
7/10 Energon Cubes
While not a lot of action happens I liked getting more backstory on Nova Prime and also how the comic kinda.. strenghtens that Primes aren't some God thing. They just have more power than other mechs. It was fun seeing Omega Supreme again, and I liked when OP got angry because Omega Supreme had played God too.
5/10 Energon Cubes.
This one was pretty boring. I've never particularly cared for Ramjet so a whole comic about him really didn't do very much. He's kinda pathetic.. Which could be grounds to like him but.. Meh. I think this comic feels a lot like filler. It's not bad thought, which is why it lands square in the middle of the ratings
Ohhh god. 5/10 Energon Cubes.
Earthspark, Earthspark, Earthspark... How do I put this into words... I know! Like this: "I was prepared but not for that." That will have to do.
So I didn't fully enjoy it but... it also didn't suck too too bad. I recon if you've got a high bar of expectations, you might like it less...
I'm really good at complaining so that's what I'm going to do:
Hot Rod's voice. I know this is a.. weird place to start. But also.. I really can't get behind his VA. WHO DID THAT TO HIM WHO SAID THAT GUY SHOULD SOUND LIKE THAT. WHY DOES HOT ROD SOUND LIKE THAT. HE HAS THE LOWEST MOST GRAVELY OPTIMUS PRIME VOICE EVER AND I HATE IT. HE DOES NOT SOUND LIKE THAT!!!
It does make my Cyberverse heart happy thought, because you could ship Soundrod pretty easily.. They're on the same team for a little while..
Who starts a show like that... We start out and Robby is being an idiot (Everyday I'm thankfull for Mo being there too) and I was going to be annoyed about what they do with Jon "no H" Schloder but you know what it's ok. But I still find it hard to belive that they start with litteral teens bullying each other.
Starscream, Starscream, Starscream.... Whistfull sigh... Boy I'm glad he was here but also... THEY DID HIM DIRTYYYYYYY WAAHAHHHHHHHHHH TOT
Also I find it funny that they didn't kill Megatron.. They just made him go back in time (like removed all his character development, Ã la Ninjago: Hands of Time
I also think it's funny that Breakdown goes back to earth with Bumblebee. (Me when I first watched Earthspark would have been DEVASTATED but now I don't mind as much.)
